First Steps to
Planning Your Outdoor Living Space
Our outdoor yards are sometimes underutilized, if
not completely forgotten. Most homes have some type of outdoor space that can be
used for rest, relaxation, or recreation. This space can vary in size from
something as small as a balcony in an apartment, to acres of land around a rural
home. Whatever the size, outdoor living spaces are one of the hottest trends. As
more and more Americans are realizing with our busy and stress filled lives we
all need a little break- to get in touch with nature and the outdoors more
often. With proper planning an outdoor living space that expresses your style
and meets those needs is potentially as close as your back door.
FUNCTION
FIRST When designing an outdoor living space, you must first ask yourself what
is the purpose or function you want to accomplish with the space. What needs
will it fill? If you are designing an outdoor room, for example, the size of
the space should be determined based on how you'll use it. Do I need a space to
enjoy my morning cup of coffee, an outdoor yoga space, a place to enjoy family
more often or place to enjoy some good food with friends? Most of us strive to
counter balance our busy lives and making the proper space outdoors is the first
step to make it happen.
SEASONS Once you know how you want to use the area the next thing to consider
is how often you'll use the space. If it will only be utilized in the summer, an
area out in the open will be fine. If you wish to expand its use into the spring
and fall especially in our northern climates, you might want to select a
location that provides some shelter. This can be accomplished with plantings, or
walls or even a cozy fireplace.
PEOPLE You should also consider who will be using the space. For example, if
you plan on entertaining, think about the typical number of people that will be
enjoying your new space and what they will be doing. Plan for children growing
older and think ahead for versatility.
DESIGN Once you've answered these basic questions, you'll be ready to consider
things like structure, privacy needs, and furniture. Looking at other homes with
outdoor living spaces is a great way to get ideas. This can be accomplished by
simply taking a walk through your neighborhood or checking out ideas on-line. We
have many resources to provide you for inspiration.

Outdoor structures like pergolas, arbors and freestanding walls can really add
that special feeling to your space when incorporated into the overall design. A
large pergola over a patio can provide much needed shade during the hot summer
months. Also, pergolas provide a great structure for showcasing climbing plants
like clematis, wisteria or even your own grape vine.
Whatever your final choices are, be sure that your outdoor living space meets
your needs. A well thought out plan beforehand will insure that you'll get more
enjoyment out of your space and for many years to come.
